The story of the Mountain Man is a story of satisfaction, glory, and happiness. On a rainy Tuesday morning, several years ago, two burly locals were lamenting with one of the treasures of the Breadboard, a server named Kerri. They were saying that they loved simple food, plain food, hearty food and big food – “cooked well, and lots of it.” They loved sausage, buttermilk biscuits, real country sausage gravy, eggs, cheese and home fries cooked just right. But how, oh HOW, could they get all the goodness they needed in one dish?
Kerri, a fixture of the Breadboard didn’t hesitate…”I hear you brothers, leave it to me!”
She disappeared in a flash and headed back to the kitchen. She told the cooks what was needed. She was deliberate, specific and in charge. That rainy Tuesday morning, the Mountain Man was born and it has been a favorite of Breadboard addicts for years.
The Mountain Man has become legendary. SOU students refer to it as “the hangover cure”. Reese Witherspoon, when shooting the movie “Wild“, is rumored to have had her first “Mountain Man” which caused an addiction leading to an intervention. And locals just see it as real comfort food – “momma on a plate.”
It’s a simple dish, but the perfect combination makes it spectacular: a homemade buttermilk biscuit split in half, topped with two sausage patties, eggs cooked any style, cheddar cheese and topped with a thick gooey delicious mass of real homemade sausage country gravy. Home fried red potatoes are served on the side and the massive platter of goodness can bring even the burliest mountain man to tears.
